How the Sort Words Alphabetically works

Alphabetical sorting uses locale aware comparison, so accented letters sort next to their base letters instead of after z. Natural order mode reads digits as numbers, so item2 sorts before item10, which is what people expect from a list of files.

Besides A to Z and Z to A you can sort by length, reverse the current order or shuffle randomly. Case sensitivity and duplicate removal are optional, and the output is joined the same way as the input so the list keeps its shape.

When it is useful

  • •Alphabetizing a bibliography, a glossary or a list of names.
  • •Sorting file names or version numbers with embedded digits.
  • •Shuffling a list to pick an order for presentations.
  • •Ordering keywords by length for a quick scan of the shortest and longest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do accented letters sort?

Using your browser's locale rules, so e and é stay together. Case is ignored unless you turn on case sensitivity.

What does natural order mean?

Digits are compared by value. Without it, item10 would sort before item2 because the character 1 comes before 2.

Can I sort a list of numbers?

The Number Sorter is better for that, since it sorts by numeric value and reports the sum and range.
