How the Remove Text Formatting works

Plain text boxes keep the characters you paste, which means HTML tags, Markdown symbols and decorative Unicode letters come along too. This tool removes each layer separately so that you control what goes. HTML mode drops tags, scripts and styles and decodes entities. Markdown mode removes heading marks, emphasis markers, link syntax, list bullets and fences while keeping the link text.

The fancy letters option applies Unicode compatibility normalization, which turns styled letters like bold or circled characters into ordinary ones. A last option deletes invisible and zero width characters and tidies spacing.

When it is useful

  • •Cleaning a web page excerpt before using it in a document.
  • •Turning a Markdown note into plain prose for an email.
  • •Undoing a stylish font that makes text unsearchable or unreadable by screen readers.
  • •Removing invisible characters that break comparisons or imports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it remove formatting from Word or Google Docs content?

Rich text formatting is already dropped when you paste into a plain text box. The tool then removes any markup symbols that remain.

Will it convert every fancy font?

Most styled alphabets, such as bold, italic, double struck, circled and fullwidth letters, convert back. For script and gothic styles use the Unicode to Text Converter, which has a dedicated reverse map.

Is a link kept when removing Markdown?

The visible link text is kept and the address is dropped. Images keep their alt text.
