How the Plain Text Converter works

Word processors and chat apps quietly replace straight quotes with curly ones, double hyphens with dashes, three dots with a single ellipsis character and spaces with non-breaking spaces. These look fine on screen but break code, CSV files, command lines and some databases.

Each clean up step is a checkbox. Straighten quotes, turn dashes into hyphens, expand ellipses, and normalize spaces are on by default. You can add accent removal and a final step that drops any character outside plain ASCII.

When it is useful

  • •Preparing text copied from a document before pasting it into code or a config file.
  • •Fixing a CSV or SQL import that fails because of curly quotes.
  • •Making sure subtitles, commit messages or filenames contain only simple characters.
  • •Converting a draft to a form that a legacy system can accept.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between this and Remove Text Formatting?

This tool changes typographic characters to plain equivalents. Remove Text Formatting strips markup such as HTML and Markdown and turns fancy Unicode letters back into normal ones.

Will it remove characters I need, such as accented names?

Only if you turn on accent removal or the ASCII only step. Both are off by default.

Why do non-breaking spaces matter?

They look like spaces but are different characters, so searches, comparisons and splits behave unexpectedly. Normalizing them to ordinary spaces avoids those surprises.
