Convert accented text to plain ASCII letters.
The tool decomposes each character into its base letter and combining marks and removes the marks, so é, ü and ñ become e, u and n. A second option handles letters that are not accent plus letter combinations: ß becomes ss, æ becomes ae, ø becomes o, ł becomes l and so on.
This is useful for search normalization, URLs, file names and systems that cannot store accents. Keep in mind that removing accents can change meaning in some languages, so keep the original text where it matters.
Only combining marks on letters are removed. Scripts such as Greek, Cyrillic or Chinese are left alone, except for accent marks attached to their letters.
Not for meaning. In Spanish, año means year and ano is something else. Use it for search and technical needs, not for editing prose.
This keeps the text as it is apart from accents. The slug tool also lowercases, drops punctuation and joins words with hyphens.
