How the HTML to Markdown Converter works

The converter uses the Turndown library to walk the HTML structure and write the equivalent Markdown. Headings become hash prefixed lines or underlined lines, lists keep their nesting, emphasis becomes asterisks, and code blocks become fenced blocks.

With the GitHub option enabled, tables and strikethrough are converted too. Unsupported elements such as forms or iframes are reduced to their text or dropped, which is the usual behavior of HTML to Markdown converters.

When it is useful

  • •Moving blog posts from a CMS into a Markdown based static site.
  • •Turning web page content into notes for a wiki.
  • •Cleaning rich text copied from the web before pasting into a README.
  • •Extracting readable content from an HTML email.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are tables supported?

Yes, when the GitHub tables option is on. Tables with merged cells have no Markdown equivalent, so they may flatten.

What happens to inline styles and classes?

They are dropped. Markdown has no styling, so only structure and emphasis carry over.

Can I convert a Word file or a PDF?

Yes. This site has a Word to Markdown Converter for .docx files and a PDF to Markdown Converter for text PDFs.
