Markdown Formatter

Tidy a Markdown document so that lists, tables and spacing are consistent.

How the Markdown Formatter works

The document is parsed and printed again with consistent rules: single blank lines between blocks, uniform list markers, aligned table columns, normalized emphasis markers and fenced code blocks left untouched. Prose is not re-wrapped, so your sentences stay where you put them.

This helps keep README files and docs tidy in version control and removes meaningless differences between contributors.

When it is useful

  • •Cleaning a README before a commit.
  • •Aligning the pipes in a hand written table.
  • •Normalizing notes exported from different apps.
  • •Fixing inconsistent bullet and heading styles in documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it change my wording?

No. It only changes spacing and punctuation used for formatting, such as list markers and table padding.

Does it format code inside fences?

Code blocks are left exactly as written.

Is there a table helper?

Yes. The Markdown Table Generator turns pasted spreadsheet cells into a table.
