How the Palindrome Checker works

Each line is tested on its own. By default the check ignores case, spaces and punctuation so that classic phrases such as A man, a plan, a canal: Panama count as palindromes. You can turn those options off for a strict character by character test.

When a line is not a palindrome, the tool finds the longest palindromic substring inside it, which is a fun way to discover hidden ones, and shows it next to the result.

When it is useful

  • •Checking words and phrases for puzzles and games.
  • •Verifying palindromes in programming exercises and interviews.
  • •Finding hidden palindromes inside longer text.
  • •Teaching string reversal and symmetry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a word and a phrase palindrome?

A word such as level reads the same reversed. A phrase usually does so only after removing spaces and punctuation, as in Never odd or even.

Does it work with accented letters?

Yes. Letters of any language are compared as they are. Use Remove Accents first if you want e and é treated as the same.

Is a single letter a palindrome?

Yes. Any one character string reads the same both ways.
