APA Citation Generator

Fill in the source details and get a correctly punctuated APA 7 reference plus matching in-text citations.

How the APA Citation Generator works

Pick a source type and enter the authors one per line, either as First Last or Last, First. The generator reduces given names to initials, joins up to twenty authors with the ampersand rule APA uses, and switches to an ellipsis for longer lists.

If there is no author, the title moves to the author position as the style requires. If the year is blank it writes n.d. A DOI typed as a bare number is turned into a full https://doi.org link. Titles can be pushed to sentence case with one checkbox, which keeps acronyms and words with inner capitals intact.

When it is useful

  • •Finishing a reference list the night before a deadline without hunting through the manual.
  • •Checking that your own hand-typed citation puts the comma and ampersand in the right place.
  • •Getting the narrative and parenthetical in-text forms for the same source side by side.
  • •Copying the entry with italics intact so that titles keep their formatting in Word or Google Docs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it follow the 7th edition rules?

Yes. It uses the 7th edition conventions: no retrieval dates for most web pages, the DOI as a URL, up to 20 authors listed, and italic titles for standalone works.

What if the web page has no author?

Leave the author box empty. The title is moved to the front of the entry, followed by the date, which is how APA handles unattributed pages. If the website and the author are the same organization, the site name is dropped to avoid repeating it.

Will it fix title capitalization for me?

Tick the sentence case option. APA capitalizes only the first word, the first word after a colon, and proper nouns in reference list titles. The converter keeps acronyms such as NASA, but you should still scan the result for proper nouns it cannot know about.
