WhatsApp supports formatting characters in messages: asterisks for bold, underscores for italic, tildes for strikethrough and three backticks for monospace, along with a greater than sign for quotes and a hyphen or asterisk for bullet lists. The first group of results wraps your text with the right markers, so it looks formatted for everyone who gets the message.
For places without formatting support, such as the About text and group names, the Unicode styles give a styled look.
The markers must touch the text on both sides without spaces, such as *bold*. Also, the formatting only works when the whole message is sent as text.
Not the markdown style. Use a Unicode style for names and the About text.
No. These are Unicode characters that happen to look like styled letters, so they paste into any app that accepts text, with no font installation. Because they are different characters from normal letters, search and screen readers may handle them differently.
