JSON Unstringifier

Paste a string full of backslashes and see the original content.

INPUT
CHARS: 0WORDS: 0LINES: 0
OUTPUT
CHARS: 0WORDS: 0LINES: 0

How the JSON Unstringifier works

The input is parsed as a JSON string literal, so backslash n becomes a real line break and backslash quote becomes a quote. If the unescaped text turns out to be JSON itself, as often happens with logs and API payloads that were stringified twice, the tool keeps unwrapping up to three levels and pretty prints the final document.

You can paste the string with or without the surrounding quotes.

When it is useful

  • •Reading a JSON payload embedded as a string in a log line.
  • •Recovering text from an escaped field in a database or API response.
  • •Debugging double encoded JSON.
  • •Turning an escaped code snippet back into readable code.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the quotes around the string?

No. It works with or without them.

What is double encoded JSON?

JSON that was converted to a string and then stringified again, so every quote is escaped twice. The tool unwraps each layer.

What if I get an error?

The input may contain an invalid escape such as a lone backslash. The message includes a line and column to help you find it.
