Hash Generator

Get the SHA family checksums of a string.

INPUT
CHARS: 0WORDS: 0LINES: 0
OUTPUT
CHARS: 0WORDS: 0LINES: 0

How the Hash Generator works

Hashes are computed by your browser's built-in Web Crypto implementation, which is fast and well tested. The text is hashed as UTF-8. Choose one algorithm or see all four at once, and pick hexadecimal or Base64 output.

SHA-256 and above are the right choice for integrity checks and signatures today. SHA-1 is included for compatibility, but collisions can be forced, so avoid it where security matters.

When it is useful

  • •Verifying downloads and file contents against a published checksum.
  • •Creating fingerprints and cache keys.
  • •Checking the output of your own code against a known good value.
  • •Teaching how small input changes produce completely different hashes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which algorithm should I use?

SHA-256 for most uses. SHA-512 offers more bits and can be faster on 64 bit machines.

Can I store passwords with SHA-256?

No. Fast hashes are easy to brute force. Use a password hashing function such as Argon2id, scrypt or bcrypt with a salt.

Why does my hash not match a file hash?

This tool hashes text. A file hash covers its raw bytes, which may differ by line endings or a trailing newline.
